We have a mated pair of babydoll sheep, Abe and Evie. This February, we welcomed their twins, a boy and a girl. They bound around the field, chasing and playing with the chickens, and wagging their little tails while they nurse. Evie is a great mamma. She dotes on them and puts up with their antics as they use her back as a springboard for their hops, practicing coordination.

We are intentionally moving slowly, building our flock. We’re learning as we go about shepherding a flock and meeting their needs. Babydoll sheep are a dual purpose breed, providing both meat and wool. That’s the official word. But we’ve found the additional gifts of joy we get from watching them in the field, and they are perfect little lawnmowers, fertilizing behind themselves. 🙂
If you’d like more information on this breed, check out this great post from a fellow homesteader. Or, you can watch a jillion youtube videos from this lady, and learn about rotational grazing and managing sheep for profit. Her contagious motto is: dream big, start small, don’t quit.

“Do not despise small beginnings, for the Lord delights to see the work begin.” -Zechariah 4:10 NLT
